Learning Outcomes
The lectures of this course aim to help the students become familiar with the following topics in particle physics: a) Kinematics and interactions of elementary particles b) the basic concept of the modern High Energy Experiments and the methods followed for precision measurements and searches for new physics c)provide a link between the measurement of cross sections and the methods to calculate them from basic principles of quantum mechanics d) discuss the parton model in elementary particles and to what extend can provide an understanding of the experimental measurements concerning depiction production e) Implement Dirac’s theory in the scattering of leptons f) the basics of the Standard Model of electroweak interactions and the properties of the W and Z vector bosons, as well as the recent discovery of the Higgs boson The consolidation of the above is achieved via problem solving which are hand out regularly to the students are expected solved and they are graded and discussed during the course

Course Content (Syllabus)
he course will provide to the students a good overview of the key discoveries in particle physics and their consequences in the development in the field, with emphasis in the recent experiments at LHC, CERN. It is a necessary base for those who are interested to carry graduate studies and research in the field. Main chaters: -Relativistic Kinemtatics, cross sections, Golden rule of Fermi and Feynman diagrams -Electromagnetic interactions (Bhabha scattering) -Weak interactions (V-A interaction, the pion decay, weak neutral curents, weak mixing angle, CKM matrix, observation of the W and Z bosons - Deep inelastic scattering, Structure functions of the proton, Neutrino-nucleon scattering - Strong interactions -Unification of weak and electromagnetic forces, the Standard model, the discovery of the Higgs boson at LHC -Searches for New Physics, Physics beyond the Standard Model
