General Prerequisites
basic knowledge of signal theory and Fourier transforms, basic knowledge of analig and digital signal transmission, basic knowledge of waveguiding theory and electromagnetic waves
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge: Knowing and understanding the linear and nonlinear phenomena in optical switching and transmission subsystems, getting familiar with optical switching architectures and network planning techniques. Skills: Identify and optimally select the appropriate optical switch technology. Use a commercial optical communication software suite. Solve exercises, present in front of an audience, search the corresponding literature.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Theory: Optical switching network types, requirements and specifications. Optical link characterization, optical signal quality analysis, Bit Error Rate, eye diagram. Non-linear transmission phenomena in optical fibers, Self-Phase Modulation, Cross-Phase Modulation. Optical interferometric filters, optical thermo-optic modulation, optical electro-optic modulation. Switching matrix architectures and technologies, 2x2 switching elements, Benes switch architecture, Clos switch architecture, Butterfly architecture, Spanke architecture. Blocking and Non-Blocking switches, router subsystems. Optical 2x2 switching elements. Optical switch technologies, basic operational principles. Optical circuit switching: architectures and technologies for wavelength routing. Optical packet switching: network types, packet labeling, optical node architectures and subsystems, optical label switching. Bit-level synchronization systems, header processing systems, routing and regeneration systems. Photonic integrated router technologies. Optical switching in metropolitan networks. Optical switching in DataCenter networks and in Chip Multiprocessors (Network-on-Chip). Laboratory (15 hours in total on the following topics): 1) experimental laboratory for optical data link characterization, 2) simulation-based lab using SIMULINK for optical transmission links that employ losses+dispersion+non-linear phenomena, 3) experimental laboratory on optica; modulator devices and optical data signal modulation techniques οπτικούς διαμορφωτές και σε διαμόρφωση οπτικών σημάτων, 4) experimental laboratory on 2x2 optical switches.
