Learning Outcomes
Upon the successful completion of the course, postgraduate students:
1. will obtain knowledge about the biological processes of aging and the pathology associated with cognitive decline with age.
2. will acquire basic knowledge about the neurobiological dimensions of mild cognitive impairment and dementia.
3. will obtain basic knowledge about the sociopolitical and legal issues associated with aging and dementia.
4. will be able to be involved in interdisciplinary interventions for the maintenance of subjective wellbeing and of cognitive resources of older adults, healthy or not.
5. will become familiar with the methodology that other sciences use to study aging.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course covers the following topics: Medical research and aging. Biological aging: biological theories, pathogical and anatomical findings. Vascular aging: vascular and metabolic risk factors for cognitive impairment development, strokes. Mild Cognitive Impairment: neurophysiological and biological indicators of MCI development, cognitive ERP's and cognitive impairment. Neurodegenerative diseases: dementias, Parkinson disease. Aging and Social Policy: Third-age care models. Social problems of older adults and their legal address: Age discrimination (ageism), legal issues related to dementia. Social contribution of older adults: Volunteering and intergenerational intervention programs, Organ Donation - Biobanks.
