Course Content (Syllabus)
Lit.7-347 Modern American Prose/Fall 2007 This course concentrates on major figures of twentieth century American literature and culture such as W.E.B. duBois, Gertrude Stein, Henry Adams, Edith Wharton, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Richard Wright, Anzia Yezierska, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Willa Cather among others. Their work is discussed primarily as representative of the aesthetics informing the dual tradition of American literary modernism, that is, either as conventional or avant garde. Furthermore, it is analyzed as shaped by forces of modernization which involve the reconsideration of such major issues as race, ethnicity and gender politics. The theoretical essays and some of the stories will be available from the copy-center “Σελήνη.” The Great Gatsby will be distributed by the instructor. All other texts are included in the Norton Anthology of American Literature .
