At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1) Understand the meaning and value of Plant Genetic Resources for Agriculture and Environment
2) Apply a program or a plan aiming to sustainable management of rural farms
3) Apply a protection and conservation scheme for PGR or a plan for transfer useful genes from wild relatives
to cultivated varieties
Course Content (Syllabus)
Plant Genetic Resources. Principles and prerequests for the development of new varieties.
Principles of Population Genetics and heritability. Ιntrapopulation breeding and selection methodology
for use in local plant populations.
Genetic background of traditional local varieties and use as gene donors.
Sustainable and Οrganic breeding.
Principles and methods of conservation and protection of PGR (in situ, ex situ, on farm).
Multivariate analysis (PCA, CL, CA) and phylogenetic relationships.
Detection and transfer of resistance or tolerance from PGR to commercial cultivars.
PGR and Biodiversity. Exploitation of biodiversity for rural development.
