Learning Outcomes
- Acquisition of knowledge about the various types of electronic media with emphasis on audiovisual communication tools and services. - Understanding of basic technological principles governing electronic media and audiovisual production and broadcasting technologies, in general. - Acquisition of knowhow and theoretical background in the design, organization and operation of television and radio stations. - Evaluation of the possibilities and requirements of the various forms of audiovisual information and the corresponding types of electronic media.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course aims at giving students the essential knowledge on the technology and tools of production, to improve their technical judgment criteria for radio and television production evaluation, and to show them how to utilize the above to produce, in the Laboratory of Electronic Media, high quality radio and television programmes aimed for broadcasting and streaming webcasting. Hands-on practical exercises include podcast and video productions on certain topics with emphasis on modern Greece aiming at English speaking audiences interested in Greek current affairs, culture, economic and political environment. COURSE TOPICS 1. Introduction to radio and television production. 2. Audio: The basics of sound theory, sound equipment and audio work. 3. How microphones work: Basic microphone technology, examples of common types, characteristics, etc. Using microphones: How to choose the correct microphone and use it properly. 4. Sound Recording: Mixers, from small portable units to studio consoles. Studio recording, sound quality: Controlling sound levels and quality. Portable recording: Using digital voice recorders. Interviewing for radio, including live studio interviews and vox pops. 5. Sound Editing: Digital audio processing and non-linear editing. 6. Television lighting techniques: Studio lighting, types of light, lighting equipment, colour temperature, contrast ratio, 3-Point lighting, lighting for video, indoor shooting with external windows, outdoor lighting techniques. 7. Camera operation: Lenses, iris & exposure, focus, depth of field, white balance, filters, shots & framing, tripods, viewfinders, shutter. 8. Video post production and non-linear editing. 9. Radio and television station technologies: Broadcasting, streaming webcasting, podcasting, web radio and web TV.
