The purpose of this course is to present tools and methodologies for evaluating the environmental impacts from human activities and introduce the environmental criteria as a key parameter to the decision making process. Within the framework of the course the environmental impact of industrial activities, construction processes and buildings integrated management are defined and evaluated in terms of energy and environmental efficiency. Emphasis is also given to the Energy Efficient Buildings (legislation framework, requirements and perspectives). Within the framework of sustainable management Life Cycle Analysis (LCA, ISO 14040-14043) and Carbon Footprint Analysis are presented in detail. Environmental Management Schemes which lead to certification such as ISO 14001, EMAS for enterprises are discussed, as well as, Energy Management Certification Schemes for enterprises like ISO 50001. Moreover, certification schemes for products like Ecolabel are presented. Finally, rating systems which lead to green certifications for buildings like LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) and BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) are introduced and compared in detail (criteria, environmental aspects, requirements, benchmarking, methodology approach, certification procedure, types of buildings certified, etc).
