Course Content (Syllabus)
Theory
Unit 1. Introduction: definitions, studies of landscape architecture in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, garden and urban open space plans, acknowledged works of landscape architecture, famous landscape architects, the meaning of scale, the meaning of a sketch.
Unit 2. History of landscape architecture: From ancient times to the Italian garden-villas of the Renaissance.
Unit 3. History of landscape architecture: From the French formal gardens up to now.
Unit 4. Site analysis
Unit 5. Principles of design: unity, functionality, simplicity, scale. Principles of landscape synthesis: lines, form, texture, color, variation, repetition, balance, emphasis. Principles of landscape design:
organization of space, connection of space, connection of elements in space, hierarchy of spaces, forms and shapes, connection of geometrical forms, rhythm.
Unit 6. Use of plants in landscape architecture: species, dimensions, planting design, ecological, functional and aesthetical attributes of plants.
Unit 7. The Mediterranean garden displayed & topography, contour lines, measuring slope.
Unit 8. Construction elements in a garden I.
Unit 9. Construction elements in a garden II & the planning process for short scale projects.
Unit 10. Garden irrigation plans.
Unit 11. Lighting in landscape architecture.
Unit 12. Presentation of landscape architecture complete folder-studies.
Unit 13. Presentation of Design Project No2 by students.
Practicals
- Design Project No1 (runs parallel with theory units 1 – 4): Creating a landscape architecture design in A3 paper with the use of the rectangular grid.
Getting familiar with geometrical shapes. Getting familiar with scale and dimensions. How to draw trees, bushes, hard surfaces etc. The idea of a concept diagram.
- Design Project No2 (runs parallel with units 4 until the end): Design of an open space (the chosen space is different every year).
Site analysis, concept, corrections of designs by the tutors, presentation of work in class.
