Solid background of the physiological systems of the organism, basic knowledge of Biochemistry
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course the students will be able to: 1. understand the roles of vertebrate hormones and overall the mammalian signaling proteins, 2. identify the location of each endocrine organ and tissue, the sites of synthesis and the actions of each hormone, 3. know the receptor functions for each hormone and the second messenger system (cAMP, calmodulin etc.), 4. understand a number of metabolic diseases that pertain to defects in hormone production or signaling.

Course Content (Syllabus)
General organization of endocrine system. Structure, synthesis, release of hormones. Mechanism of action, second messengers, mode of action, physiological influences and hormone metabolism. Hypothalamus, hypophysis, epiphysis. Thyroids, gonads, adrenals, Pancreas. Steroid and peptide hormone concentration levels. Reproductive hormones, gonadal - hypophyseal axis, growth factors.
