Course Content (Syllabus)
SUBJECT OF THE COURSE
The subject of the course is the Theory and Practice of Material Culture and the critical treatment of our cultural heritage as it is recorded in the architectural legacy . The course combines theory and design. The design studio focuses on monuments, selected even among the humble creations of anonymous architecture, which offer direct aspects on issues of timeless qualities of space and constructive solutions. These are usually monuments of the recent centuries, which are accessible to the public, are considered to be suitable for systematic field work, and often help the students to confront an interesting variety of some contemporary concerns of today's society. in other words the design studio deals with buildings or ensembles of architectural heritage that concern public opinion and are usualy subjects of public debate.
AIM OF COURSE
The aim of the course is to raise the awareness of future architects in reading ,recognizing and interpreting the historical architectural environment through their contact with it. The teaching process seeks to provide them with the basic skills to be able to handle such sensitive subject, with increased requirements and increased complexity, both in programming and design, while at the same time seeks to familiarize students with the multidimensional and interdisciplinary approach of the historical architectural reserve.
This workshop offers to young architects, at a relatively early stage of their studies, the basic necessary knowledge for dealing in the future with the redevelopment of the architectural heritage and familiarizes them with the general issues of architectural interventions in a historical environment.
The implementation of the workshop requires the movement of the students in the selected historic settlements and field work as part of the educational process.
An educational trip is planned.
