Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will have mastered the historical emergence of the legal institutions and concepts that they will encounter in their courses of modern public and private law. They will be able to understand without difficulty the common birthplace of the modern European legal systems, which historically have followed a different evolution in the eastern and in the western part of the former undivided Roman Empire. Finally, the students are going to enrich their legal education with the required essential historical knowledge of their cognitive object.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course focuses on the major particularities that differentiate the byzantine legal system from its roman background, upon which it was institutionally and ideologically structured. Therefore, the teaching evolves around the nature and the functioning of the sources of byzantine law, the organization of the government, the administration of justice and the law of marriage. The course also examines the way in which the codified by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian roman law of the Digest became a political tool and also an object of scientific research in the medieval West from the 11th century onwards, leading to the formation of a common foundation on which were based the European legal codes that saw the light simultaneously with the creation of the nation - states in the 19th century.
