Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the Cyprus Question from the end of World War II to the rejection of the Annan Plan. Being one of the longer-standing current international issues, the Cyprus Question in its successive phases provides a rich framework for the study of important aspects of contemporary political and diplomatic history. Students are introduced to the inception of the Question – inextricably linked to the vicissitudes of the Eastern Question and the rise of nationalism in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean. Then, the Question is examined as a conflict of rival nationalisms, as an international problem in the framework of the Cold War and the post-Cold War period, as a key issue of Greek foreign policy and Greek-Turkish relations, as well as a testing ground for various methods of ethnic and international conflict management and resolution.
