Learning Outcomes
The course aims to familiarise the students with modern Italian History (15th to 19th cent.) through a critical study of aspects of Italian society and culture. These topics are integrated with the broader framework of European developments which impact and define the course of the Italian peninsula. During the course the students come into contact with the relevant bibliography and use historical maps and other sourses of the period. As further motivation for more active participation, the course offers students the possibility to write papers on the examined topics and present them in class. Course Content (Syllabus)
The course analyzes Italy's society and culture from the time of the great geographical discoveries of the 15th century and the foreign invasions, up to the emergence of nationalism and the creation of the independent Italian state (19th cent.). Here is an overview of the particular areas examined:
Methodological issues in the study of modern Italian history; division in periods; historiographic approaches; sourses and tools of research. The great geographical discoveries: conditions and motives; the Italian contribution; economic and political consequences affecting the Italian states. French - Spanish competition for control of the Italian peninsula. Reformation and Counter-reformation: their impact on the social and cultural development of the peninsula. Italy during the era of European absolute monarchies: under Spanish rule (political and economic recession, social and cultural crisis). The scientific revolution in Europe (16th-18th cent.): sciences and culture in Italy. The formation of elements of national identity: how foreigners viewed the Italians. The Enlightenment, the enlightened monarchy, the reforms in Europe and in Italy. The French revolution. The Napoleonic rule. The Restoration. The impact of the French dominarion, the emergence of nationalisms and revolutions. The Italian nationalist movement (Risorgimento) and the process to the achievement of national unification. The creation of the independent Italian state (1861).

Student Assessment
Description
The degree to which each student has met the requirements of the course is assessed by the following means: by his active participation in the class proceedings; by the writing of a paper and presenting and supporting it in class; alternatively, by sitting a two-and-a half-hour long written examination on the covered scientific material, including analysis of written sourses (old documents and maps).
