Course Content (Syllabus)
Amino acids: classification, acid-base properties, absorbance spectrums, reactions. Proteins: structure, properties, biological role. Enzymes as catalysts. Biological oxidations: mechanism of electron loss, electron transfer in respiratory chain and in other systems, oxidative phosphorylation, Krebs cycle, glyoxylate cycle, replenishing reactions of the Krebs cycle. Carbohydrates and their metabolism: carbohydrate compounds with high biological significance, carbohydrate catabolism and biosynthesis. Lipids and their metabolism: lipids with biological significance, lipoproteins lipid catabolism and biosynthesis, ketone bodies. Amino acid metabolism: amino acid catabolism and biosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, urea cycle, biologically important amino acid analogs. Nucleotide biosynthesis and catabolism. The integration of metabolism.
