Learning Outcomes
Students acquire the theoretical background to understand and interpret optical phenomena and they are able to understand the function of optical instruments which they may encounter in a laboratory. In this way they become more competent users and able to assess the quality of their measurements. This is accomplished through both the theoretical background provided as well as through the experimental demonstrations during the course and the visits to the Spectroscopy Laboratory where they have direct contact with the intruments and their function.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Geometric Optics, Wave Optics, Polarization, Interference, Diffraction, Prisms. Optical Components and Devices: Lenses, optical aberrations, achromatic systems, fiber optics, cameras, microscope, telescope, Fabry-Perot, interferometers, holography, polarizing plates, diffraction grating, spectrometers. Light sources, Coherence and Lasers.
