Learning Outcomes
Students would get familiar with the basic aspects of byzantine hymnography. They would focus on the study of the problems related to the kontakion (Romanos the Melodist) and they would practice with the writing of a research dissertation on a kontakion of Romanos.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The golden age of Byzantine hymnography (6th-8th cent.): The kontakion (Romanos the Melodist). The Akathist Hymn and its problems. The poetry of the canons (John of Damascus, Kosmas Melodos, Andrew of Krete).
