Learning Outcomes
During the course, the students are expected to study in the field the geological structure – tectonostratigraphy and development of the Hellenides geotectonic zones, after their theoretical presentation during the lectures and they will be able to understand the creation and evolution of the Hellenic orogene in the frame of the Alpine orogenesis and the geotectonic processes that influenced and formed the broader Hellenic region. They will be exercised in the recognition of the main geological formations of the Hellenides and structures which are related to possible sites of economical significance. They will distinguish in situ various geo-materials with variable quality and they will assess their behavior in a slope, a tunnel, a dam or a foundation. They will link their theoretical knowledge to the actual scale either of natural geo-hazards or construction works (the scale of a specific construction). They will assess the engineering geological behavior of the various formations as well as the problems and basic principles for the design and constuction of major construction works. During this procedure the constant link between the geological information presented earlier by the tutor of the Geology of Hellenides and the qualitative characteristics that the geo-materials end up with during the process is strongly emphasized.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Geological cross-section of NE-SW direction across the Hellenides in northern Greece, identification – study of the Hellenides geotectonic zones (composition, structure, evolution) and their geotectonic significance. Study of the engineering geological behavior of the Hellenides geologic formations in construction works (dams, tunnels, roadworks) failure phenomena and landslides. Exercises on the respective subjects handed in on site by the students. Indicative examples: hand in Road slope slide Stability analysis of cut slopes (measurements of discontinuities, mechanisms of failure) Rock mass classifications Tunnel failure mechanisms
