Learning Outcomes
With the successful completion of the lectures the student will be able to: - distinguish the sources of Canon and Ecclesiastical law and the main collections - understand the theological presuppositions of the interpretation of the orthodox canonical tradition - evaluate the ways in which the Orthodox Church is structured and organized and particularly in Greece - identify the different systems of relations between Church and State particularly in Greece - approach the concept of religious freedom and equality according the Greek Constitution and European legislation - explain role of religion in the public space - analyze the main causes of ecclesiastical or religious tensions - deal in a comparative way with the law of christian churches in an ecumenical prospective

Course Content (Syllabus)
The main object of the course is the study of various aspects of the Orthodox tradition both historically and in the present. The sources of Canon and Ecclesiastical Law are examined chronologically and systematically as well as their development in relation to a concrete legal framework. It is analysed the relationship between Theology and Law and the nature of the Holy Canons. It is also presented the organizational and administrative structure of the Orthodox Church and especially of the Greek Church. Additionally are examined the basic legal relations of the Orthodox Church and the known religions, as thy are reflected in the current system of State-Church relations in Greece and the obligation of the protection of religious freedom according to the Greek and European law. In addition, the course deals with the law of other Christian churches in a comparative way and in an ecumenical perspective.

Description
Students’ participation in classroom (discussion, asking questions, formulating comments, giving information) is considered as a very important indicator of the interest of the student and is auxiliary to the final evaluation, which is usually oral. Written assignments are taken into account.
