Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
-Specify the development stages of the Orthodox ecclesiastical life during the last period of the Russian Empire and the period of the Soviet Union that succeeded it,
-Approach critically the impact Soviet Union had on the life of the Churches, which were under its strong influence or arose from it
-Analyze currents and tendencies of Russian theological thought and their most important representatives in the same period as well Finally
-Realize the power of ecclesiastical experience, which shaped the spiritual life and permeated popular culture in all its expressions in the Slavic world of Southeastern Europe and the Balkans
Course Content (Syllabus)
This course presents the evolution of Orthodox ecclesiastical life in modern times within the borders of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, which succeeded it. At the same time, is presented the influence of the Russian ecclesiastical tradition on the life of the Churches, which were under its strong influence or arose from it.
Also, in this course is presented the currents and tendencies of Russian theological thought, as well as its most important representatives in the critical period from the 19th to the 20th century. Their presentation begins with the mystical movement of Paisius Velickovsky's circle. Then, it is explored its influence on Russian theology, as well as the currents of Slavophiles and Westernizers that dominated throughout the 19th century and into the early 20th century. Following are presented the ideological tendencies that shaped the political developments that influenced Russian theological thought up to the Revolution of 1917, which is a milestone to its subsequent course in the 20th century.
Finally, in this course are presented the aspects of the spiritual life and ecclesiastical experience of the Slavs of Southeastern Europe and in particular of the Balkans as reflected in their popular culture.
