Learning Outcomes
Students upon successful completion of the course are able to:
-redefine religion as a social phenomenon
-describe the classical sociological views of religion
-understand the functions of religion in modern society
-define and interpret modern religious phenomena such as fundamentalism, secularization, globalization, etc.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course aims to introduce students to the sociological approach of the religious phenomenon and examine the relationships between religion and society. More specifically it focuses on the following issues: definitions and functions of religion as a social phenomenon; classical sociological approaches of religion; the functions of religion in contemporary society; the phenomenon of secularization; variations of religious phenomenon in the western world, new religious movements and migrational religions; the issue of fundamentalism; the phenomenon of globalization and the study of religion; religion, nationalism and nationalistic ideology; the relationship between Sociology and Theology.
