Learning Outcomes
With the successful attendance of this course, the students 1. will be familiar with the repertory of the Secular Art Music of Constantinople (composers, forms), 2. will be trained in singing kratemata in Byzantine notation, 3. will learn the methodology of approaching musical settings belonging to these repertories: practice of makam, usul, solmisation and singing with lyrics of the pieces, 4. play and sing/chant representative pieces of the repertories mentioned before, 5. come in touch with characteristic musical instruments, timbres and tunings of the classical oriental music.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course is a practical one. Its aim is that students become familiar with the classical Oriental, through training, study and playing of representative pieces belonging to the repertories of the Secular Art Music of Constantinople and the Byzantine and post-Byzantine kratemata, especially those bearing names of musical instruments. The list of composers comprises the following names: Zacharias Chanendes, Dimitrie Cantemir, Petrakis (Petros Peloponnesios), Nikolakes, Brothers Kyriazes a.o. Furthermore, the program comprises some important testimonies of old Greek folk music from post-Byzantine musical manuscripts in late Middle Byzantine notation and exegeses/transcriptions by contemporary musicologists (D. Mazaraki, Th. Apostolopoulos, K. Kalaitzidis). The interpretation of the selected pieces will be done vocally, with the accompaniment of Greek traditional instruments and classical Oriental instruments/Western non-equal tempered instruments, such as kanun, ud, lafta, Constantinopolitan lyre, tanbur, yayli tanbur, bedir, ney, violin, cello, contrabass a.o.
