The students will be able to: 1. Know how lift and drag is generated on airfoils and wings 2. Know the equations governing the flow field on aerodynamic bodies 3. Calculate the aerodynamic forces 4. Apply the elements of basic theories of Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics

Course Content (Syllabus)
1. Aerodynamic coefficients. Airfoil and wing geometry parameters. Aerodynamic forces and moments. 2. 2-D incompressible flow on airfoils. Circulation and lift generation. Thin airfoil theory and analytical solutions. High lift airfoils. High lift devices (flaps and slats). 3. Incompressible flow on wings. Air velocity and pressure distribution on wings. Elliptic planform. Wing-tip vortex and induced drag. Winglets and other devices for reducing the induced drag. Delta wings. 4. Compressible flow. Thermodynamic equations applied to compressible flow. Velocity of sound. Mach cones, shock waves on airfoils. Normal and oblique shock waves. Compression and expansion waves. 5. Compressible subsonic and transonic flow on airfoils and wings. Equations for compressible flow on airfoils. Transonic and supersonic airfoils. Drag coefficient due to compressibility in transonic flows. Supercritical airfoils. Swept wings. Wing-fuselage interaction and area rule.
