Course Content (Syllabus)
General principals of Pesticide Pharmacology and Toxicology (xenobiotics, biological action, toxicity/pest control performance, intake, absorption, transport through bilogical membranes , mechanisms of absorption, distribution and availability of pesticide active ingredients at the site of action). Chemistry (physicochemical properties) and action (mode of action, metabolism, resistance and ecotoxicological effects on non-target organisms) of the main groups of pesticides (insecticides, acaricides, nematicides, fungicides and herbicides). General principals of pesticide fate in the environment and pesticide risk assessment to humans and other organisms in the environment. National and EU legislation for pesticides registration . 1. Chemical control of pests and Intergrated Pest Management (IPM) 2. Development and registration of pesticides 3. Principals of Pesticide Pharmacology and Toxicology -biological action -toxicity and effectiveness on targets -factors affecting biological action. Intake, absoprtion, transport, distribution and availability of pesticides at the site of action. Permeability of biological membranes and mechanisms of absoprtion of pesticides through biological membranes of plant and animal cells. Metabolism. Pesticide classification. 4. Physicochemical properties and action (mode of action on targets, metabolism, resistance and toxicological effects on non-target organisms) of insecticides affecting the nervous system of insects. 5. Insecticides continued. Insecticides affecting insect growth and development (IGRs) (insect hormone mimics and chitin synthesis inhibitors). 6. Physicochemical properties and action (mode of action on targets, metabolism, resistance and toxicological effects on non-target organisms) of acaricides and nematicides. 7. nematicides and other pesticides. Physicochemical properties and action (mode of action on targets, metabolism, resistance and toxicological effects on non-target organisms). 8. fungicides. Physicochemical properties and action (mode of action on targets, metabolism, resistance and toxicological effects on non-target organisms). 9. herbicides. Physicochemical properties and action (mode of action on targets, metabolism, resistance and toxicological effects on non-target organisms). 10. Biopesticides: Biological pesticides of plant origin and microbial origin. 11. Pesticide Resistence. Case studies. 12.General principals of pesticide fate and behaviour in the environment. Pesticide risk assessment to humans and non-target organisms. 13. Pesticide legislation in EU and Greece.EU regulations for pesticide registration processes and actions to achieve sustainable use of pesticides
