Learning Outcomes
It is expected that with the successful completion of the course, the students:
-will be familiar with the concept of the environmental performance of buildings and of the built environment, will acquire basic knowledge on existing methods for the assessment of this performance (framework, basic principles, main assessed performance categories, etc.) and will understand basic components of the LCA of building materials and components (methodology, results),
-will acquire knowledge about the environmental axis of historic / heritage buildings’ restoration / refurbishment and the specificities accompanying the related assessments,
-will be introduced to contemporary approaches to the assessment of environmental performance (or some of its aspects) in the context of historic / heritage buildings’ restoration / refurbishment,
- will analyze the unique characteristics of historic buildings in light of contemporary needs and technological advancements,
- will expand their knowledge base in areas pertaining to building constructions' thermal inertia in relation to involved building materials,
- will comprehend the connections between the characteristics of historic buildings and the steps that can be taken to improve their thermal efficiency.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Building sector and environment. Buildings’ environmental performance. Methods and tools for the assessment of the environmental performance of buildings and of the built environment (for every examined method: framework, basic principles, structure, main assessed categories, methodology, etc.). Life cycle analysis and assessment. Restoration and environmental performance. Environmental dimension of historic / heritage buildings’ performance and restoration / refurbishment (also reference to monumental constructions). Specificities / particularities of environmental performance assessment in the context of historic buildings’ restoration / refurbishment in comparison with modern constructions. Associated to historic buildings considerations and issues in existing environmental performance assessment methods and examples of related approaches and evaluations internationally. Distinctive characteristics of historical buildings. Assessing the thermal vulnerability and behaviour of building structures. Illuminating the relationships between building elements' thermal resistance and thermal capacity. Utilising the thermal inertia of building materials. Strategies for enhancing the thermal behaviour of older building designs.
