Learning Outcomes
The student will be able to observe and recognize the basic osteological parts and anatomical features of vertebrate organisms, classify fossilized vertebrate specimens based on their anatomical features and recognize the importance of fossil vertebrates in the Greek fossil record
Course Content (Syllabus)
Fossilization and fossiliferous deposits (for non-geologists - common with PO2). Introduction to the principles and rules of taxonomic nomenclature of animal organisms - concept of paleontological species and morphospecies (common with PO2). Basic anatomy and skeletal evolution of vertebrate organisms: Pisces, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, Mammals. Fish fossils and otoliths. Osteology of tetrapods. Comparative skeletal anatomy of Amphibian-Reptile-Bird-Mammal. Odontology: evolution and comparative morphological study. Anatomical comparative study of skeletal anatomy of different mammalian families. Ichnofossils. Types of characters. Biometric methods and instruments-Collection of biometric data (common with PO2).
