Learning Outcomes
By the completion of the course the students will be able to:
- compare different Christian traditions and movements
- trace the socio-political factors that contribute to the emergence of ancient and contemporary sects
- explain the criteria that the Church developed in her encounter with the heresies and sects
- formulate with clarity theological arguments in the discussion of various Christian groups
Course Content (Syllabus)
Orthodoxy and heresy are not just theoretical constructions. They were presented by concrete historical defined groups though history. In this course the variety of the conceptions of the catholicity of Church are discussed in their historical and theological context.
Course schedule:
1) Methodological issues. Analysis of the terms "orthodoxy" and "heresy"
2) The worshipping Church community as the criterium of Orthodoxy and truth
3) Presuppositions of Church theological discourse
4) Judaism and Hellenism as the ideological context of ancient heresies
5) Ancient trinitarian heresies
6) Ancient Christological heresies
7) From Schism (1054) to Reformation
8) Anabaptists
9) Anti-trinitarian heresies in the Reformation period
10) Anti-trinitarian Pentecostals
11) Chiliasm - Eschatological sects of modern times
12) Sectarian movements and teachings in the Russian and Greek world (16th-19th c.)
13) Sectarian movements in Greece (20th c.)
