Learning Outcomes
The student can recognize the linguistic variation as well as the geo-linguistic varieties of the Spanish language.
The student acquires knowledge of the geographical and social varieties of Spanish as well as the ability to recognize, define and characterize the phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical features of Latin American Spanish.
The student acquires fundamental knowledge about the linguistic variation of Spanish in Europe and its main phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical characteristics.
The student acquires sufficient resources for the analysis and recognition of linguistic variation in American Spanish.

SYLLABUS
Introduction to the varieties of Spanish.
Key concepts: standard language, the norm and varieties of the language.
Linguistic variation. Spatial variation. Social variation.
Spanish dialectology: The dialects of Spanish.
The languages of Spain and their varieties: Geographical varieties of Spanish.
Spanish in America: The divisions in areas of Spanish in America.
History of American Spanish.
The treatment of Spanish varieties in manuals of Spanish as a foreign language.
