General Prerequisites
The current programm of studies of the school of Biology AUTH (2012) does not have prerequisite courses. The teachers suggest that the students should have knowledge provided in courses like General Ecology and Plant physiology
Learning Outcomes
Aiming at acquiring knowledge and understanding of physical, chemical, biological and geological processes in the oceans and seas and their interactions focusing on the most recent and significant achievements of Biological Oceanography The student learns to apply the basic knowledge of systemic approach in order to interpret and assess changes in different scales.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Ανάπτυξη της Επιστήμης της Ωκεανογραφίας, τα σημαντικότερα επιτεύγματα. Θέματα Φυσικής Ωκεανογραφίας. Γεωλογικές διεργασίες και γεωλογικά χαρακτηριστικά των ωκεανών και θαλασσών. Φυσικά και χημικά χαρακτηριστικά του θαλασσινού νερού, φυσικές και χημικές διεργασίες στις θάλασσες και τους ωκεανούς. Βιολογικές διεργασίες (παραγωγικότητα, τροφικά πλέγματα και μικροβιακός βρόχος, φαινόμενα άνθισης φυτοπλαγκτού και θαλάσσιου χιονιού). Βιογεωχημικές διεργασίες και μεταφορά, τύχη ρύπων. Ωκεανοί και κλίμα. Εργαστηριακές ασκήσεις: 1. Διάκριση σωματιδιακού υλικού στο θαλασσινό νερό. 2. Mέτρηση πρωτογενούς παραγωγικότητας θαλάσσιων φανερογάμων και μακροφυκών. Υπαίθριες ασκήσεις: Δειγματοληψία βενθικών μακρόφυτων καιφυτοπλαγκτού.

Student Assessment
Written Examination, Oral Presentation, Tests , written assignment , Report for laboratory exercise. 1. Each laboratory exercise is examined orally and in writing , with projects performed in small groups. The laboratory examination of each subject must be successful. The average of the degree of laboratory exercises is considered as 15% in the overall score. 2. At the end of each lecture or in between lectures students are required to respond in writing or orally ( at that time or by sending text within a certain date) to questions related to course content. For this they are evaluated and may be primed in the final score up to 2 degrees (20 %). 3. The final examination is performed a) either(students are free to choose for exemption from the 60% ​​of the syllabus ) through the development and support of a topic based on the analysis and synthesis of information from review articles and b) or short answer questions or test development in questions about the whole matter . For the final score it is taken into account 15% of the laboratory assignments, and up to 2 degrees from questions from attending the lectures (20 %).
