Learning Outcomes
1. To understand the techniques employed for the acquisition, representation, processing, compression and archiving of digital media. 2. To identify the common building blocks of these techniques shared among the various types of media (audio, images and video). 3. To get familiar with the formal specification documents (like the international standards of ISO, ITU, etc) and make students capable of implementing multimedia systems that conform to these specifications.

Course Content (Syllabus)
1. Digital multimedia – Images, audio, video, text, 3D graphics, interactive media. 2. Representation (Media formats) 3. Digitization: Sampling, Quantization 4. Compression / Coding: 4.1 Common blocks of media compression 4.2 Study of major media compression/coding standards (DPCM/ADPCM, MP3, JPEG and related standards, ITU - H.261 & H.262, ISO - MPEG-1/2/4) 5. Streaming / RTSP, ITU-H.32x 6. Archiving and Retrieval, Metadata Encoding (ISO-MPEG-7)
