Learning Outcomes
A successful graduation from this class will allow the student to:
- understand the general training and biomechanical principles of swimming
- apply specific swimming training and technique to participants in swimming clubs
- combine theoretical and applied knowledge in issues regarding teaching the technique, tactics, as well as strength and conditioning in swimming
- detect mistakes in the technique and to describe them in a comprehensive way so that there can be corrected
- plan training programs from competitive swimmers
- evaluate the efficacy of specific swimming training programs and to adapt them on the requirements of each athlete
- combine knowledge from physiology, biomechanics, psychology, strength and conditioning, and didactics, for competitive and innovative training programs and methods used to improve performance in swimming
Course Content (Syllabus)
General and specific knowledge of competitive swimming as well as the interaction between theory and practice in the areas of teaching, technique, tactics, and training. Emphasis is placed on Physiology and Ergophysiology as well as on the Coaching of Swimming across the age range. The syllabus includes:
1. Historical development of swimming.
2. Principles of buoyancy and propulsion.
3. Teaching the different types and techniques of swimming, starts, and turns.
4. Biomechanical analysis of the techniques of swimming, starts, and turns.
5. Regulations of swimming and organization of races.
