Course Content (Syllabus)
Environmental impacts of energy production and use. Renewable energy sources and technologies. Calculation of the wind potential of an area. Average wind speed values. Effect of height on available wind potential of an area. Wind Power Analysis Using the Weibull Distribution. Calculation of wind potential using numerical models. Course exercises in MATLAB. Theoretical calculations and factors determining the solar irradiance at Earth's surface. Irradiance on tilted and solar-tracking planes. Solar trackers. Solar radiation components and their spectral characteristics. Performance of photovoltaic cells and their spectral characteristics. Atmospheric factors that determine the amount and modify spectrum of solar radiation. Quantification of the contribution of direct and diffuse components on solar flux on surfaces mounted on various slopes. Comparison of solar power on surfaces with different slopes. The role of aerosols and clouds. Simulation of solar flux on tilted surfaces from measurements of horizontal irradiance. Methods of forecasting solar radiation at different time scales. Introduction and familiarization with the PVGIS system. Computational exercises from the above topics.
