Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students are expected to:
-understand the different spatial scales of transport planning;
-acquire basic knowledge about the characteristics of different transport systems;
-comprehend the transport and land use systems interactions and the process of integrated transport planning;
-get acquainted with the basic concepts of traffic engineering.
-be informed about the intelligent transport systems and applications;
-applied knowledge and technical skills for the analysis and study of traffic data.
Course Content (Syllabus)
This is an introductory course to the fundamentals of transport systems planning and spatial analysis of transport networks. The multimodal nature of transportation is demonstrated by an overview of the basic characteristics of ground, air, maritime and inland waterway transportation networks including their operation, design and economic characteristics. The course present the principles of traffic flow, road classification and capacity and initiate students to transport demand analysis, modeling and land use systems interactions. The major goal is to appreciate the multi-dimensionality of transportation issues, emphasizing in: sustainability, land use structure, environment and energy, technology, institutions and process of decision making. The course focus focuses on:
Introduction to system analysis and planning of transport networks; Basic characteristics of transport modes; Land use and transport systems interactions from the microscopic to macroscopic scale; Principles for an integrated spatial and transport planning; The concepts of mobility and accessibility; Road classification, traffic flow elements and flow-density fundamental relationships; Introduction to travel demand forecasting procedures; Overview of Intelligent transport systems; Transport systems environmental impacts.
Keywords
