Learning Outcomes
At the end of the semester, the student will be able to: 1. recognize and analyze the traits of the main film movements and genres, 2. recognize and analyze thethe sociopolitical context that influences cinema and 3. conduct bibliographical and academic research and write an academic essay.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course presents briefly the history of cinema from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the new millennium. In particular, the course examines: the relation between history and the cinema, the formation of the cinematic medium and the technological, social and economic conditions of the film industry, the key movements in the silent era, the Hollywood Studio Era (1930-1948) with special emphasis on the development, traits and conventions of the popular film genres, French Poetic Realism, Italian Neorealism, the New Waves of the 1960s, the New Hollywood and Conglomerate Hollywood. In addition, we discuss the impact of the historical, socioeconomic and political context in the production and distribution of motion pictures. Finally, we present the basic principles of academic research and writing.
