Language of Instruction
  • German (Instruction, Examination)
Learning Outcomes
The seminar includes educating and familiarizing the students with the structure and mechanisms underlying selected intelligent computational applications of Syntax, Morphology and Semantics. Furthermore, training in building and processing Language Resources (Text Corpora) is carried out so as to build programs related to Teaching, Sentiment Analysis, Information Retrieval and Machine Translation.
General Competences
  • Apply knowledge in practice
  • Retrieve, analyse and synthesise data and information, with the use of necessary technologies
  • Work autonomously
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Be critical and self-critical
  • Advance free, creative and causative thinking
Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction to Language Technologies and the theory of Computational Linguistics. How Computational Lingustics is related to Theoretical Linguistics. Analysis of Language Resources (Text Corpora) at a theoretical and practical level and applications of Language Resources in Teaching. Introduction to Machine Translation, Statistical and Neural Method. Presentation of mechanisms for Information Retrieval and Sentiment Analysis systems. Axis 1 Methods and theoretical approaches of Computational Linguistics, Morphosyntactic and Semantic Analysis, Electronic Grammar and Formalisms (HPSG: Head-driven phrase structure grammar). Introduction to Natural Language Processing and concepts such as tokenization, segmentation, tagger, identification of grammatical categories of tokens, parser, as well as the concept of algorithm. Presentation of programs such as Sentiment Analysis (Sentiment Analysis tools: Rosette, Clarabridge), Text categorization (APIs: MonkeyLearn, Google Cloud NLP), Information Retrieval. Session 1: Getting to know each other - Introduction to the seminar Session 2: Introduction to Computational Linguistics and its applications Session 3: Language Technologies and Applications (Information Retrieval, Sentiment Analysis), programs / systems structures. Axis 2 A brief history of Text Corpora, presentation of the largest German Text Corpora (DWDS, DeReko, Sketch), multilingual Text Corpora (OPUS - Open source Parallelkorpus, Multext Project) so that students get acquainted with their environments in practice. Analysis and processing of TC aiming at intelligent data analysis. Annotation levels, ways and tools (TreeTagger, Berkeley-Parser, MATE-Parser), annotated Text Corpora. Connection of Language Resources with Teaching German as a Foreign Language. Session 4: Theory of Linguistic Resources (Corpora) Session 5: Working with Corpora Session 6: Corpora and Teaching Axis 3 Presentation of the structure and features of the existing MT Systems, Statistical Machine Translation and Neural Machine Translation. Links between Text Corpora and Machine Translation. In-depth insight into the concepts of algorithm, n-grams, Machine Learning, basic concepts of Statistical and Neural Machine Translation, as well as the use of language technologies in practical software systems.
