Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students: - Will have a theoretical understanding of the main interactions between economic growth/development and the natural environment - will have been trained in the use of methods that are able to evaluate and/or "measure" sustainable development. - They will have developed the practical and theoretical skills necessary to analyze, compare, and assess various environmental and sustainable development policies, measures and tools.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course consists of three parts: 1. Economic theory and the environment Introducing to the main economic theories and to their approach to environmental issues. Environment, natural resources and the circular flow diagram. Visions of the future (optimistic, pessimistic) Classical economists and environmental economics. Marxism on the environment. Welfare economics. Externalities and environmental cost: definitions and examples. Transferable permit systems. Coase theorem: efficient level of environmental protection and pollution. 2. Ecological theory and economics Introducing to the main ecological theories. Integrating economics and ecology. The economic theory on common property resources – tragedy of the commons. The limits to growth. 3. Sustainable development Definitions and frameworks for sustainability. Criteria for sustainability. Weak and strong sustainability. Environmental Kuznets Curves. Measuring sustainability and sustainable development indicators.
