Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able: 1. to understand the basic concepts and the principles of rural sociological research 2. to formulate research questions 3. to use literature databases 4. to choose among the different types of research design 5. to read and evaluate scientific articles. 6. to understand the principles of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed research designs, and to can apply them for studying rural community issues 7. to develop familiarity with the different techniques of data collection in the rural (participant observation, interviews, etc) 8. to understand the principles of research ethics 9. to develop skills in analyzing and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data 10. To write a scientific paper/essay

Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction to nature and theory of knowledge. Research biases and ways to prevent them (inaccurate observations-excessive generalization-selective observation). Exact observation and understanding of reality (consensual and empirical reality-social construction of reality). Research design. Definition of the research problem-object. Variables and measurement. Literature review. Formulating hypotheses. Conceptualization. Selection of data collection techniques. Selection of research subjects. Social Measurement-observation. Translating the research idea into research questions. Research ethics: Voluntary participation. Anonymity. Confidentiality. Informed consent. Methods/tools of data collection: bibliographic surveys, interviews, questionnaires, observation, etc. Scales. Developing a questionnaire. Methods of qualitative field research and qualitative data analysis. Participatory observation, interview, biographical analysis, autobiographical memory research, action research, historical-comparative analysis, ethnography, content analysis, thematic analysis, case studies, experiments, group research, mystery client, Delphi technique, etc. Quantitative analysis: Independent and dependent variables. Associations/correlation of variables. Differences between variables. Descriptive and inferential statistics. Research for social impact. Writing a scientific paper/essay. Bibliometric indicators.
