General Prerequisites
Students should have basic knowledge of plant anatomy and morphoplogy, plant phsyiology, soil science and meteorology-climatology.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. recognize the most important field crops that are important for human nutrition. 2. know the structure and function of field crops. 3. understand how the envrinonment affects the development of field crops (climate, soil, biotic factors). 4. understand the importance of fertilization and plant nutrition for crop plants. 5. understand the agricultural practises that are used in field crops. 6. know the cropping systems.

Course Content (Syllabus)
1. Introduction (Agriculture as an art and science, agriculture and human nutrition, origin of cro-p plants, classification of crop plants with different critiria) 2. Structure and function of field crops 3. Envrionment and development of plants – Climate (solar radiation, temerature, rainfall and other precipitation, wind, light, evaporotransiration, photoperiod, the agricultural climate of Greece and distribution of crops) 4. Envrionment and developmen of plants - soil, and biotic factors. 5. Growth, developemnt and yield of crops. 6. Crop rotation. 7. Soil tillage. 8. Plant nutrition and fertilization. 9. Seed and seeding. 10. Cropping systems (monoculture, intercropping, convenstiona agriculture, sustainable agriculture) 11. Cropping systems (Integrative crop production, organic agriculture, precision agriculture, new tecnologies in agriculture, good agricultural practises, environmental indices, application of good agricultural practises). 12. Brief presentation of the main field crops that are important for Greece. The products and the quality of these products. 13. Brief presentation of the alternative crops such as aromatic and medicinal plants, energy crops that are important for Greece. The products and the quality of these products. Practicals 1. seed of field crops 2. identification of field crops at different growth and developmental stage 3. seed gremination, seed quality characteristics that are used for seed control and fertilization.
