Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course the students will be able to: 1. Understand the main principles involved during the transfer of water by closed pipes or open channels 2. Depending on the given data the students will be able to compute the discharge, the diameter of pipes or the head losses during the water flow in pipes 3. They will be able to compute the characteristics of water distribution systems 4. They will be able to compute the head and the power of pumps used for the transport of water with pipes. 5. They will be able to compute the characteristics of uniform flow in open channels. 6. They will be able to compute the characteristics of steady gradually varied and rapidly varied, non-uniform, flow in open channels.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Fluid statics, kinematics and hydrodynamics. Laminar and turbulent pipe flow, computation of head losses with the equation of Darcy - Weisbach. Hazen - Williams empirical equation. Solution of pipe flow problems. Exact explicit equations for the solution of pipe flow problems. Head losses and minor head losses. Parallel and branching pipes. Pumps and pipe flow. Pipe networks. The method of Hardy Cross. Networks with pipes in series. Open channel flow classification. Governing equations for steady flow. Energy principle, specific energy, critical flow, Froude number. Nonuniform or varied flow. Methods for the varied flow computation. Longitudinal flow profiles. Momentum principle. Hydraulic jumps. Hydraulics of free overfall.
