Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, students are expected to be able to: -to acquaint with the general principles and the methodological tools of phonetics, phonology and their branches -to deepen their knowledge as regards the relation between orthography and pronunciation -to acquaint with the articulatory features of linguistic sounds of Italian and Greek -to transcribe in International Phonetic Alphabet -to handle effectively the basic notions of phonological analysis (phoneme, allophon, variety, distribution etc). - to process and analyse a big range of phonological data - to recognize and analyse phonological phenomena with special emphasis on Italian and Modern Greek -to acquaint with the acoustic characteristics of sound and recognize waveforms and spectrographs -to deepen their knowledge on theoretical and methodological issues concerning the interface of Phonetics and Phonology with the other levels of linguistic analysis.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course provides a complete introduction to phonetics and phonology. Phonetics addresses the study of the sounds of human speech as physical entities, i.e. how they are produced, transmitted and perceived by the listener. Phonology studies the sounds of human speech as linguistic units, that is, how speakers of a language use sounds to differentiate the meaning of words. In particular, the main topics that are discussed-analyzed in the context of the lectures are the following: Introduction to the science of phonetics and phonology. • Acquaintance with language sounds; how they are produced and how they are perceived either as units of speech or as integral elements of continuous speech. • Acquaintance with the variety of linguistic sounds in the languages of the world • Relationship between orphography and pronunciation • Voice production system-voice mechanism • Description of the articulatory characteristics of the linguistic sounds (vowels-semivowels-consonants) of Italian and Modern Greek • Transcription of sounds based on the International Phonetic Alphabet (Emphasis on the sounds of Italian and Modern Greek). • Acquaintance with the basic concepts of phonological analysis (phoneme, allophone, variety, distribution, functional differentiation). • Examination of the basic phonological phenomena of Italian and Modern Greek. • Presentation and analysis of the acoustic characteristics of language sounds – reading waveforms and spectrographs. • Familiarization of students at the experimental level with the possibilities of recording and analyzing the speech signal.

Description
Participation in classroom discussions. Papers/exercises, mid-term exam (optional). WRITTEN final exam (the exam covers all the topics of the course). Students must answer exercises (on linguistic theory and application of linguistic analysis) and in theory development questions. Evaluation criteria for the exercises/ linguistic applications are as follows: 1. Accuracy. 2. Correctness. For the theoretical questions the evaluation criteria are the following: 1. Accuracy and clarity. 2. Comprehensibility and avoidance of redundant information.
