General Prerequisites
There are no pre-requirements for enrolling but for the students to complete successfully it is necessary for them to attend and progress at the same time in Arabic I.
Learning Outcomes
With the successful completion of this class, the students are able to: -Name and reproduce the letters of the Arabic Alphabet in all their different forms -Recognise and use the diacritical signs necessary for the reading of the Quranic text -Read the first words and Quranic verses that they were taught in class -Describe the structure of the Quranic text and its history -Analyse contemporary academic research related to the codification of the Quranic text -Read introductory articles on the Quran -Summarise the history of the genesis of the exegetical tradition (tafsir) -Use public speaking skills -Use academic writing and independent research

Course Content (Syllabus)
The class is an introcution to, first, the Quranic text in Arabic and in the translation of its concepts in Greek and other languages, and, second, to the development of the science of the Quranic exegesis in Arabic (al-tafsīr) in the context of other interrelated fields of knowledge (al-‘ulūm al-qurāniyya) during the early and formative period. The students are introduced in the history and structure of the text as well as to the academic questions that concern the scholars of the Quran. They also get to know the first commentators/ exegetes (mufassirūn) and the varied forms of the early exegesis

The examination has always an oral elements and it can also be written. Optional written assignments counts towards the total percentage of the grade. The degree of participation in the class during the lectures and seminars is in their final evaluation.
