Learning Outcomes
1)Have acquired the basic knowledge regarding the principles and concepts of environmental hydrogeology. 2)Have knowledge of the physicochemical properties of water and groundwater collection methods. 3)Understand the natural process within soil, vadose zone and aquifer. 4)Recognize the hydrogeochemical processes which lead to groundwater pollution. 5)Can determine site suitability to establish sanitary landfills, recognize environmental impacts of landfills and provide solutions regarding the waterproofing system of the landfill. 6)Have knowledge of groundwater vulnerability and pollution risk concept. Additionally, they can apply disparate methods to asses groundwater vulnerability. 7)Can delineate protection zones of wells and springs. 8)Recognize soil aquifer treatment (SAT) systems and methods of aquifer remediation. Field Trip Learning outcomes: Understanding the role of Environmental Hydrogeology and its applications.
General Competences
  • Apply knowledge in practice
  • Retrieve, analyse and synthesise data and information, with the use of necessary technologies
  • Respect natural environment
Course Content (Syllabus)
•Introduction to the basic concepts of Hydrogeology - Terminology •Soil properties •Groundwater quality •Evaluation of hydrochemical data-Hydrochemical types of groundwater •Interaction of water and environment •Pollution and contamination of groundwater •Pollution sources and transport of pollution (advection, diffusion, hydrodynamic dispersion) •Soil as recipient of solid wastes - Sanitary Landfill- Site selection •Vulnerability of aquifers to external pollution •Disposal of wastewater on land, Soil-Aquifer-Treatment •Salinity of groundwater due to seawater intrusion •Impacts of climate change on groundwater •Protection and remediation of aquifers Field Trip The field trip includes a guided tour of the Mavrorachi landfill including the sewage treatment plant, the groundwater monitoring network, and the disposal site. The criteria of site selection are presented and analyzed. In addition, a presentation of the waste management practices of the Mavrorachi landfill took place.
