Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the students will:
1) Understand the structure and life cycle of meteorological systems.
2) Be able to analyse qualitatively and quantitatively the characteristics of the meteorological systems using weather charts.
3) Understand the prevailing meteorological conditions and be able to predict the future ones (using meteorological observations and charts)
4) Be able to make survey of the international scientific literature on meteorological systems of interest.
Course Content (Syllabus)
1) INTRODUCTION
Definition and aim of Synoptic and Dynamic Meteorology, historical overview. Sources of data (meteorological observations, weather forecasts) and educational information in the internet.
2) SYNOPTIC METEOROLOGY
Surface and upper air meteorological observations. Construction and analysis of surface and upper air weather charts, weather forecasting. Identification and analysis of cyclones, anticyclones, troughs, ridges, jet streams and fronts on weather charts. Rossby waves. Use of thermodynamic diagrams in weather analysis.
3) DYNAMIC METEOROLOGY
Meteorological coordinate systems. Lagrangian and Eulerian time derivatives. The equations of motion in the atmosphere. Scale analysis. Balanced flow (geostrophic wind, gradient wind, cyclostrophic wind, thermal wind).
