Learning Outcomes
1) To learn how scientific research is conducted and evolved. To distinguish the categories of scientific research, their particular characteristics and their utility in society. 2) To raise awareness of ethics, gender equality, environmental and social issues. 3) Understand how science progresses in history. What is the role of existing knowledge in scientific progress? 4) To find out the epistemological issues in each era and how they have influenced the development of theories for understanding nature. 5) To approach from the philosophical point of view the basic theories that have shaped the evolution of Geology to the present level.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The problem of defining science. Science as a methodology, as organized knowledge, as a problem-solving tool, as a social issue. Scientific research, Scientific observations, Scientific deduction and induction. Science and technology. Science and the Society. The role of the scientist in the society. Historical evolution of scientific thought: In the prehistoric period, In the classic era, In the Hellenistic times, In the Middle Ages, In Renaissance and Enlightenment Until the twentieth century, The last century. Historical evolution of Geology. Basic epistemological issues.
