Students are expected that, within this course, they will:
• Be able to better understand the biological dimension of mental disorders
• Know the advantages and limitations of the biological therapeutic approach
Course Content (Syllabus)
The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge of the neuro-psychobiology and psychophysiology that underlie normal mental life and human behavior as well as the biological models and biological theories that have been formulated to understand mental disorders. Subsequently, both basic and clinical psychopharmacology and pharmacotherapy will be taught with an emphasis on therapeutic guidelines both in terms of their development and their clinical utility and application. The different classes of psychopharmacological substances, their pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties and their place in psychiatric therapy will be taught in detail, especially in relation to the proposed biological models of the various mental disorders. Special emphasis will be given to the analysis of side effects as well as to the methods of their treatment. In addition to the psychopharmacotherapeutic approach, other non-pharmacological biological therapies such as electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation and others will be taught.
