Course Content (Syllabus)
The seminar aims at familiarizing students with the aims and methods of the discipline of History. The issues to be presented include: the methodology, ethics and general strategy of historical research; tracing, analysing and evaluation documents and bibliography; exercise in palaeography; the structure and presentation of historical essays.
1. The object of historical research (objectivity, causality, utility)
2. Review of historical schools (19th century onwards) and the making of historical branches.
3. Preconditions and kinds of historical production (articles, monographs/thesis, collective volumes, manuals, book reviews)
4. Searching and evaluating bibliography. Online data bases. Test
5. Searching for sources published or unpublished. Top Greek archives. Test
6. Strategy, methods and research ethics.
7. Exercises in paleography and calendars. Test
8. Exercises in source evaluation. Test

10. Reference styles and bibliography. Best writing-practices. Plagiarism. Paper assignments.

Student Assessment
Description
Evaluation (50%) depends on the quality of a written assignment (up to 5,000 words) based on secondary or/and published primary sources. The criteria for assessment include the bibliographical research, the critical approach to the sources used, the quality of writing and the proper and consistent use of a reference system. A manual for academic essay writing is available on the Department’s webpage. The second half of the evaluation score is based on invigilated written tests or other assingments.
