Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students are expected:
(a) to be acquainted with central philosophical questions of ancient Greek philosophy.
(b) to read and comprehend ancient Greek philosophical texts from the original, and to engage themselves with philosophical thinking, starting from their responses to the «Poetics».
(c) to discuss central concepts in the «Poetics», including “imitation”, “pity” and “fear”, “necessity and probability”, and “catharsis”.
(d) to become familiar with theoretical approaches to the genres of tragedy and literary criticism.
(e) to understand Aristotle’s place in the history of poetic and aesthetic theory.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course is devoted to the study of Aristotle’s «Poetics», the first extant philosophical treatise on the art of poetry, which has exercised a great deal of influence on subsequent literary theory. Through the concepts of μίμησις, καθόλου, ἁμαρτία, and κάθαρσις, we will focus on the nature of tragic poetry, and the value of the mimetic arts.
