Course Content (Syllabus)
The course is an introduction to the art of cinema. It aims at familiarizing students with the main concepts, principles and techniques that explain how movies are made, how they work and how they affect spectators. The course syllabus comprises three main parts: the first part establishes the basics of cinema as an art form (medium, technology and industry), as well as sets the foundations for approaching or ‘reading’ a film; the second part introduces students to the ‘language’ and technique of filmmaking, as well as a basic understanding of common genres and their features. Finally, the third part is a selection of essential creative, aesthetic and cultural considerations on the content of movies; in the third part students are also given the opportunity to actively reflect on film texts and are acquainted with responding formally to them. By the end of the course students will be expected to have acquired concise knowledge about all the essential aspects of film, i.e. its business practices, technological development, composition, and aesthetics. The course combines lecturing with film samples and discussion, to which students’ contribution is considered essential.
