Learning Outcomes
The aim of the course is to bring students in touch with the different contexts of innovation development and the complexity of spatial innovation systems. In addition, it seeks to help participants build policy-making capacity to enhance technological innovation. Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to
- recognize the link between regional development and innovation,
- be aware of possible measures, mechanisms, institutions and actions that support regional technology and innovation, and
- select / plan public interventions for spatial innovation development and planning.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course concerns the study and analysis of a) the spatial dimension of innovation and the different systemic forms that it takes, b) the mechanisms and institutions that support innovation and lead to the establishment of spatial innovation systems, and c) policies and strategies to enhance innovation at different spatial scales.
We discuss theories, concepts and methods for analyzing and better understanding the drivers of regional innovation. Emphasis is given on the dimension of space in a way that allows the recognition of the dynamics of innovation and helps in the interpretation of spatial inequalities.
