Expected learning outcomes: To have a thorough knowledge of the texts discussed in class (literary and filmic as well)/ familiarization of students with basic terms of narrative theory/ Ability of students to recognize and analyze the interconnections between frame story and internal narrative as well as the possible ‘cultural’ ramifications of such a structure/ improvement of the students critical thought.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Since the story cycle One Thousand and One Nights, the frame narrative (story within a story or "second-order story") has been a popular device that writers have often used to give their stories a credible background or a surprising twist. In the course of literary history, the relationships between frame and internal narrative have become increasingly complex. In the aforementioned Arabian Nights, for example, Scheherazade may 'only' want to delay her death through her stories addressed to the bloodthirsty sultan, but in Thomas Mann's story "Fallen", several centuries later, the frame narrative is used to trigger an 'aha' effect for the reader (and for the extradiegetically listening characters). Diegetic framing is also used in film, with often vexing results – such as in Robert Wiene's expressionist masterpiece The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: does the frame narrative that the director adds (in which the protagonist figures as an inmate of an insane asylum), which is supposedly missing from the script, lend the film its groundbreaking ambivalence or does it weaken its initially inherent revolutionary potential? Or vice versa, e.g. in the film adaptation of Alexis Zorbas by M. Kakoyannis: to what extent does ignoring the 'philosophical' ring or frame structure of the novel in the film and the director's exclusive focus on the internal plot influence the reception of the story – and is this somehow connected to the spread of a "Greek male mythology", of which the adventurous protagonist, bursting with vitality, stands as a symbol? The seminar is dedicated to the above-mentioned and many other similar cases, in which 'technical' considerations of narrative theory are combined with questions of cultural studies.
