Learning Outcomes
The students will: Gain knowledge of the morphological traits of important native and exotic woody taxa (genera and species), which are used as ornamental in Greece. Learn about their geographical distribution and their biological demands. Identify important ornamental woody species, based mainly on vegetative characters. Identify ornamental woody species using morphological traits of crown, trunk and bark.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Distinctions and forms of trees and shrubs. Trees and shrubs in parks and roadsides. Selection of trees and shrubs for parks and roadsides. Systematic classification, identification and description based on morphological characters of the main native and alien woody ornamental species. Aesthetic characteristics, time and duration of flowering. Geographical origin. Biological requirements and resistance. Deciduous and evergreen woody ornaments of parks and roadsides. Broad-leaved: Acacia, Acer, Aesculus, Ailanthus, Albizzia, Alnus, Bauhinia, Betula, Brachychiton, Broussonetia, Buddleja, Buxus, Callistimon, Cassia, Casuarina, Campsis, Catalpa, Celtis, Cercis, Chaenomeles, Chimonanthus, Cotoneaster, Diospyros, Elaeagnus, Eucalyptus, Euonymus, Forsythia, Gleditsia, Grevillea, Hedera, Hibiscus, Jaccaranda, Jasminum, Koelreuteria, Kolkwitsia, Lagerstroemia, Laurus, Ligustrum, Magnolia, Mahonia, Melia, Nerium, Olea, Parkinsonia, Parthenocissus, Paulownia, Photinia, Pittosporum, Platanus, Plumeria, Populus, Prunus, Pyracantha, Punica, Retama, Rhododendron, Salix, Sophora, Spartium, Spiraea, Syringa, Trachelospermum, Viburnum.
